Wakesurfing the Bigboy Flyboy

You have to come back to the Flyboy Wakesurf website for Shuv Week! That’s right we have a bunch of video and sequence shots of surf style shuv based tricks starting tomorrow, one never seen before surf style shuv based trick that you won’t want to miss!

We took the final prototype of the Bigboy Flyboy out for a little wakesurfing test run and wanted to share some of those test results with you. Now just a few disclaimers. The first is this wakesurf board is destined to become a plug in a mold making process, so we didn’t go to the extra added expense and time of having it built in a composite sandwich construction. The production version will be in the composite sandwich version, with some slight variations, from it’s smaller brother. Because of that, there are no aerials done on the board. Landing from an air on normal construction will result in heel dents and that would have then been transferred to the mold! So all of the pictures and video are just surface rotations and rail riding. The Bigboy Flyboy measures 4’9″ LOA and 21″ at it’s wide point.

So in short it’s what we wanted! The Flyboy and now the Bigboy Flyboy is a delicate balance of down-the-line, speed, looseness in the tail when needed, manuverability and unadultered fun! Ok we just tossed that last attribute in there, but we really do like the way the Bigboy Flyboy rides. Tad more length, tad more width, tad more thickness equals lots more fun for the larger rider. The extra length will help folks that have a wake that is REALLY steep. That tends to be one of the biggest causes of pearling, is a wake with no shoulder. In surfing terms most waves have a really nice shoudler away from the white wash and curl. Many boats don’t really develop a shoulder, mostly just a face and the curl. The Bigboy Flyboy with the extra length will help riders that typically ride that vertical face, by giving more tail length to roll back on. It will also help those folks with wider stances, so you can drive hard into the wake.

We think we’ve achieved the perfect blend of extra width and length so that the board still maintains all of the manuverability that Flyboy’s are known for!

A few pictures, again no airs to avoid the heel dents before being shipped to the factory for duplication.  Also, you can double click on any of the pictures and you’ll be taken to our Flyboy Wakesurf webshots album: wakesurfing the bigboy flyboy

It has plenty of speed, drive and turning ability

Lots of extra length, also, without losing it’s ability to turn nicely.

The Bigboy Flyboy is designed to be ridden. Bigger guys are going to be more powerful and with wider stances and more leg muscles, there is more leverage for the typical bigger rider. We didn’t want the board to be easily overpowered by a bigger guy, so we did change the fin placement, rails and bottom contour. Most companies that create a bigger board, blow it up 2 inches and call it good. They never ride the same and all you have to do to understand those folks chasing the gravy train is see that nobody rides the bigger board as well! We spent almost an extra year working on the issues that making the larger Bigboy Flyboy entail. So when you bigger guys, with more muscle, and more leverage get out there and push the tail around it doesn’t submerge or twist your leg off! It’s going to ride just like the smaller Flyboy does for NON-bigboy folks. You ride hard, you need a wakesurf board that will let you push it around and responds to your efforts, not that wimps out.  We wanted you to come away from riding the Bigboy Flyboy with a respect for the board! :) Now we don;t want you to think that means the board is completely different, it’s not, but we worked hard at developing a board that for bigger guys would FEEL just like smaller brother does for NOT bigger folks. For example, with a wider stance would you expect the wide point of the board to be at the same place as the shorter board? Nope, you’d want it to be in the same relative location as the shorter board, but not the same place. That doesn’t mean pushing it forward 2 inches, but looking at the relationship to where the front and back foot are. So with THAT change, would you expect the fins to be in the same place? Nope! But you can’t just stuff them in at the same angle and same spot up from the tail or rail. Instead, the fins must remain in the same relative position in order to preserve the ride quality. The point being that we spent TONS of time thinking through the concept and then testing each variable in combination to arrive at a Bigboy Flyboy that would ride the same as it’s smaller brother. Bottom line is, the Bigboy Flyboy will give you the best ride of your life if you’re BIGGER!

Here is a short unedited video of James Walker wakesurfing the bigboy flyboy, again specifically instructed to not air it out or dent it! But you can see that the board easily spins a 360 and James nails a surface reverse. Don’t you want a wakesurf board that helps you land that elusive 360? Of course you do!

Sweet huh?

Now you’ll notice that James really had to push the bigboy flyboy around on that surface reverse. James weighs in around 150, and of course the Bigboy Flyboy can be ridden by smaller folks, but that isn’t what it’s designed for, it’s designed for you bigger guys. It’s going to have the same feel for YOU as a bigger guy as the smaller version does to smaller folks. Like we say, it’s a BIGBOY Flyboy!

Here are a few sequence shots of James Walker landing that surface reverse, so you can see the extra length, flotation and also the legendary Flyboy manuverability that folks have come to know and love in all Flyboy’s.

We wanted to point out this picture. Have you ever ridden a wakesurf board that is stupid wide? The rail doesn’t sink and you slide down the face sideways? Ever try it backside switch with the board revert? The Flyboy and the Bigboy Flyboy have the perfect blend to allow to do tricks you never even thought possible! Not too wide, not too narrow and with a shape that HELPS you land tricks!
