Rocker: what it means on your wakesurfer.

“To find out more about FlyBoy Wakesurf boards, CLICK HERE!”

What is rocker on your wakesurfer and how does it effect your wakesurfing?  This article will attempt to address everything you need to know about nose and tail rocker and also the apex of the board.

First some background. Rocker elements are commonly measured on surfboards meant for the ocean.  They are typically noted in inches one measurement for the nose and one for the tail. Basically rocker is the curve or arc of the bottom of the board. Rocker is measured by turning the board upside down, such that the deck is lying on some surface.  Then a “rocker stick”, a measuring device that is flat, won’t sag and is as long as the board, is placed on the center of the board.  This “center” is both lengthwise and widthwise.  It’s important to note the widthwise ceter, because many boards have a concave bottom and the center of the board widthwise will normally be at the apex of that concave.

Next, the board is shifted until the rocker stick is level, and still resting on the center point of the board.  Once that is achieved, measurements are taken from the bottom of the board at the nose, to the underside of the rocker stick.  The same is done at the tail.  Those measurements are noted and will give the tail and nose rocker of that board.

So how is this meaningful?  Tail rocker affects how manuverable the board will be and also how tightly the board will turn in the small pocket we have while wakesurfing.  However, too much tail rocker and the tail will get pulled down into the wake face, making the board exceptionally slow.  As mention in previous article, tail rocker is a necessary element for vertical surfing / aerial wakesurf boards.

Nose rocker is needed because it impacts the boards ability to turn.  Not enough nose rocker and the board tends to pearl (burying the nose) and too much nose rocker and the board tends to plow through the water, making it quite slow.

Common measurements for surf style wakesurf boards are tail rocker of 1/2 inch and a nose rocker of 2 1/2 inch.  These measurements are decidely less than a shortboard for the ocean.

Typically, entry level wakesurf board will have almost no rocker, as this allows the board to minimize drag and allows it to go as fast as possible.  Most newbies are only concerned with down-the-line speed, well because they can’t do anything else.  As you become more proficient, you’ll be interested in a board that turns hard, as well as, maintains down-the-line speed.

In a future article, I’ll address the design element of apex – that point in the rocker where it changes between nose and tail rocker.

Go boost!
