Flyboy Wakesurf skim collaboration

Did we mention how cold the water was here over the weekend? It’s definately winter here in Northern California and you can feel it when you are wakesurfing.

We wanted to tell you about a couple of Flyboy Wakesurf skim projects that we have in the works, we will be showing you, in the upcoming weeks, a couple of builds, but also we wanted to talk to you about a collaboration we have going with the folks from Calibrated Wakesurfing. If you are a wakesurfing history buff, you’ll know the name Calibrated. Mike Armstrong is the principal in that company and has been in the industry for what seems like ages. He was one of the founding members of the original World Wakesurfing Organization, which is now defunct.

Mike and Calibrated have sponsored some of the most well-known and most accomplished riders in wakesurfing: Bri Chmel, Jaime Lovett and Dominic Legace.

Calibrated has developed several unique designs, they brought us a swallow-tail in a skim board and Bri Chmel has gone on to win a bunch of championships on that basic design.

One other shape is the Telum, we’ve owned that traditional skimboard shape, but in a size that was a tad too long for James Walker at the time. We then got a chance to demo a Victoria Factor in a slight smaller size and James really liked that board.

Something was really familiar with that Factor, we couldn’t quite tell what, but it felt like we had ridden that board before, a serious case of Deja Vu! We had been wanting to develop a high end skimmer and we needed the expertise of a skilled skim manufacturer, that’s why we reached out to Mike at Calibrated.

We took our Victoria Factor down to Mike as part of our discussion. When we were there, we talked about how familiar the Factor was and then we did a few things.

Oh man! The Factor was more a Telum than the Telum! The rocker was exactly the same, the traction was a slightly sized down copy, the outline was an in between size of the Telum. That’s where we had ridden the Factopr before, it was a Telum! Check the picture above you can see the original traction templates and the rocker in the press was identical.

Anyway, we prefer to ride the originators design and not a close approximation, so we’ll have Mike build us a Telum in the appropriate size and retire the knocked off Factor. But we also are working with Mike on a super secret concept, Flyboy Wakesurf skim and Calibrated Wakesurfing collaboration  appropriately named: Vicky’s Secret.

For those of you not familiar with Mike Armstrong, here he is.

The Vicky’s Secret will have a very unique construction that we can’t wait to try, plus we are splurging on the graphics and we think you’ll like those too! Be sure to check back as we post updates on those two skim projects and hopefully soon we’ll have some pictures and video of James Walker wakesurfing them.

Thanks so much for following along, we really appreciate it.
