akesurf board bottom shapes most typically are flat. The reason for this is that they are easier to shape, rather than offering any performance advantages. Most of the high end wakesurf boards have some type of bottom contour. There isn’t a predominant bottom shape, like there is in ocean style shortboards. With shortboards, the vast majority have a single concave flowing into a double concave through the fins and out the back.
Some background: what is a concave? Check a spoon, the curved part where you eat your cereal from is concave. A concave adds speed to your board because it straightens the center line of your board, while leave the rocker at your rails unchanged. There are some who theorize that a concave adds additional wetted surface area (a curve is longer than a straightline), but it’s significantly less than 1%, so that theory is dubious. Another thing that a concave adds is holding power to the board in turns. The rails are less full, due to the concave and sink easier, plus the curve of the concave adds a hook like feature. The FlyBoy Wakesurf Board extends this design further in the hooked ‘cave.
A vee is the opposite of a concave. Vee bottoms are used where no extra speed is needed, for example in big waves. Bigger waves have power, so there’s no need for your wakesurf board to get extra speed. This isn’t something that is applicable to our small wakesurf waves.
To visualize the effect of a concave on the bottom of your wakesurf board, this standard test is suggested. Go to the kitchen sink and turn on the tap. Grab a spoon and first hold the convex side up under the stream of water. Roll the spoon from side to side. Notice the water release off the edge of the spoon? Also, you can tip the spoon from side to side pretty easily. Now turn the spoon over. Water everywhere! The water spits off the concave of the spoon much faster and much harder!
It’s the same with your wake surf board. Water travels across the board diagonally. Next time you’re wakesurfing, look down at the wake, you’re traveling across the face, not down and with the wake out towards the flats. As such, the only time water travels straight down your board is when you’re about to fall! Have a look at your wakesurfing photos, you can see the water squirting out just like that spoon under the stream of water from the tap.
The single concave on the FlyBoy Wakesurf James Walker Signature model, composite sandwich construction is further enhanced with the hooked ‘cave design, available only on this board. This design feature flattens out the middle of the concave more and then increases the curve of the concave out at the rails, enhance the effects of the concave to give additional speed and grip in the wave face. The benefits to you are faster speed and more holding power in turns, without the adverse effects of extra fins, which typically restrict surface rotational tricks. Another benefit is release. One of the most important factors for a good aerial wakesurf board is the ability of the wakesurf board to release from the wake. As you have observed with the spoon test mentioned above, this hooked ‘cave, releases water quickly and aggressively.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
